Why is Lederspiel.fi in English?
I am from California. I have lived in Finland over 20 years. Yes, I speak Finnish, but English is easier for me. Feel free to communicate in Finnish.
Why is Lederspiel so cheap?
Lederspiel is a mikro business. There are no extra expenses. I'm happy to be able to supply hobbyists and hopefully make enough money get better tools.
Also I try to get the best price quality I can negotiate. The most popular leather has been cheap lower grade leather. This means there are a few flaws, eg. insect bites, etc, to cut around.
Grade A leather is the same stuff but with less flaws. I can probably get grade A if you need a big piece of flawless leather, but the price can be two or three times higher.
Cheaper leather and cutting around flaws is the economic logical way to go.
Why should I buy leather from a middleman?
Buying leather is tricky. At this point I have received 5 deliveries, of which 3 were incorrect.
I take the risk of ordering unseen mystery leather and dealing with the problems. My relationship with the supplier helps. Still the variation in thickness and size is always an interesting suprise.
When you buy from Lederspiel you can inspect the leather before purchase, or I can at least send pics and measurements of your specific piece before purchase.
Also I will sell smaller pieces cut to your requested size at a reasonable price.
I have searched long and hard for cheap leather. I am confident that Lederspiel offers the best price / quality ratio for leather in Finland. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Does using leather make me a bad person?
I don't thick so. All of the leather I sell is a byproduct of the food industry that would otherwise go to waste. This is not the fur industry.
Others can debate whether it's more ethical to consider leather as honoring noble beasts, or if petroleum based substitutes are better.
I'm fine working with natural materials that would otherwise be in a landfill.
